Mykal Coles and his family are being assisted following a house fire in Woodbridge that "left them with nothing," according to the organizer of a fundraiser on their behalf.

"The immediate needs of this family are immense - they require funds to secure a rental home, purchase basic furniture, provide food and clothing for the children, and start the challenging process of rebuilding their lives from scratch," Erica Cuff wrote

"Currently, they are staying in two hotel rooms, but this arrangement is only temporary, and they urgently need your support to find a stable living situation."

According to the Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue, on Friday afternoon, crews were called to the 6100 block of Oust Lane, where there was a reported fire in a second-floor bedroom.

The fire was quickly extinguished, but the harm was done, and the home sustained "moderate" smoke, fire, and water damage, leaving it unsafe to occupy.

It was later determined by the Maryland Fire Marshal that the fire was caused by the candle that ignited bedding materials.

"Allowing an open flame near any combustible material is dangerous," officials said. "The Fire Marshal’s Office warns against the use of candles. If candles are used special precautions should be taken.

"Never leave a burning candle unattended. Never positioned a candle where it can be easily disturbed or knocked over," they continued. "Keep the candle at least three feet from any combustible material."

Following the fire, friends and well-wishers have raised thousands of dollars on behalf of the family, which is reeling following the devastating blaze.

"The emotional toll of losing everything they owned is immeasurable, and the family is now facing the daunting task of moving forward while dealing with the mental aspect of this tragedy," fundraisers added

"Your generosity can make a significant difference in helping them regain stability and begin the healing process."
